Having Fun at the LA County Museum of Art

Posted by Daniel Snyder on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, In : Los Angeles

Before William, Jeni and I occasionally went to the LA County Museum of Art (known in these parts as LACMA).  We went to members-only parties in the evenings, listened to jazz in the courtyard, saw classic movies in the theater, and hit some of the better exhibits when we had time.

Now that our toddler dominates our life, we still occasionally visit LACMA but we see a whole different side of the museum.  Here are five reasons we take William to this celebrated LA art institution:...

Family Friendly Fun on South Beverly Drive

Posted by on Thursday, May 27, 2010, In : Los Angeles

We didn't have anything planned last Saturday afternoon so we decided to visit South Beverly Drive.  The area is always near the top of our list of places to hang out because it's so easy for families - and it's relatively uncrowded.  You see, most people who visit Beverly Hills check out the downtown area and feel they’ve seen the city.  But South Beverly Drive is has much more to offer families.

Here are a few things to do on Beverly Drive between Wilshire and Olympic Boulevards.

Downtown Beverly Hills with Kids

Posted by on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, In : Los Angeles

Tourists and locals alike flock to Beverly Hills to see its world-renown shops, restaurants, and celebrities.  Of course, our kids have a different agenda – they want to have fun wherever they go.

That’s not easy when the family is in the midst of Dior and Harry Winston, Tiffany and Dolce & Gabana – but it can be done.  Here are some tips for having family fun in downtown Beverly Hills:

Edelweisse – A classic candy shop on Canon Drive.  It’s pricey – as is almost everything else in...

The Grove with Kids

Posted by Jennifer Snyder on Monday, May 24, 2010, In : Los Angeles

I love to shop. Always have and, I suspect, always will.  Before my son was born I can recall telling my girl gang that if there were a fire in my home, one of the things I would grab (along with my Grandmothers jewelry box) would be my Prada Mary Janes.

How times have changed now that I am a Mommy! I still love to shop but now it’s all about how to entertain a toddler while I quickly grab something I want!

My absolute favorite place to shop with Will is The Grove at Fairfax and Third near L...

Lessons from Legoland

Posted by on Friday, April 30, 2010, In : Dans Journal

As we’ve mentioned, Will loved his recent visit to Legoland.

But during the four days we were in Carlsbad, the happiest I ever saw him was not at the theme park or inside the aquarium.  It was when we played in a small park at our hotel, which had hosted a wedding the previous night.

With rose petals still strewn across the park, the three of us played tag and hide & seek for a half hour.  Will was incredibly excited to frolic among the flowers.

In thinking back on our trip after we return...

Jeni's Journal: Taking Time to Run

Posted by on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, In : Jeni's Journal

I’ve said it before and, after events this week, I have to repeat myself: William thinks the car is a place of torture and the carseat is a form of the rack.

Having said that, why does our family travel at all? Well, Will loves the experiences when we get where we are going. I keep hoping for the day when he will be able to understand that the journey will pay off with a great reward like, oh, say, three days at Disneyland. Until then, I run my mantra on a loop while he complains behind me:...

Legoland: Day Three – The SeaLife Aquarium

Posted by on Monday, April 26, 2010, In : San Diego

Legoland's SeaLife Aquarium beckoned!

You see, when we entered Legoland the previous day, we bought tickets that allowed us entry into both the park and their aquarium for two days.  (They cost about $75 for each person after our AAA discount and Will was free because he was under 2 years of age.)  So on our second day, we made a beeline for the aquarium.  Will had never been to one before ...

We didn’t have high expectations since we figured it was a theme park aquarium - one attraction a...

Day Two: Deconstructing Legoland

Posted by on Friday, April 23, 2010, In : San Diego

After Will woke up from an early nap on our second day in Carlsbad, we grabbed a quick snack in the room and blasted off to Legoland.  We were staying at the Sheraton hotel right next to the park so we walked down a path that we were told would lead us to a private entrance to the park.

As we took the ten-minute walk off hotel property, I saw all the open land around us.  The place isn’t built up like Disneyland – it’s young, with room to grow.  They’re building a water park, which sho...

LegoLand, Part One: The Hotel

Posted by on Thursday, April 22, 2010, In : San Diego

Jeni, William, and I recently made the trek to Legoland – a hundred mile drive from our Los Angeles home down the California coast to Carlsbad.  Our credit card points afforded us a free stay at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa, right next to the park.

As we pulled into the hotel, I was glad we were staying three nights.  The day was sunny and warm, the lobby was new and inviting – and I could see the hotel pool beckoning in the distance.

Our room was large and family-friendly...

A Toddler Tours the LA Zoo

Posted by on Friday, April 16, 2010, In : Los Angeles

Will has been mimicking animal sounds for months.  He loves telling us what ducks, lions, dogs, and monkeys say – and has recently fallen in love with the animal-oriented Sprout program Zoboomofoo.

Since he’s almost 16 months old and walking quite well, we decided to take him to the Los Angeles Zoo so he could meet some of his favorite animals up close and personal.

At 113 acres, the LA Zoo is home to 1100 animals from around the world, including chimpanzees, zebras, komodo dragons, mountai...

A Toddler-Eye View of the Getty Center

Posted by on Friday, April 2, 2010, In : Los Angeles

When most of us visit the Getty Center in Los Angeles, we see the breathtaking beauty of a hilltop museum with a garden that resembles a sculpture.

When we took our toddler William up the hill recently, we found that he loved the Getty as much as we did – but for completely different reasons.  He didn’t care about these gorgeous views.

He loved … the open spaces...
